Metro (local train) (Moscow): this is the fastest, most reliable and least expensive way to get to every place in the capital. Built during the Stalinist era, the Moscow Metro is famous for its architecture and history. Anyone visiting Moscow goes down to the “underground palace” clad in granite and marble to admire mosaic, sculptures and stained-glass windows. Today 180 stations of 12 lines of Moscow subway are notable for complete safety of train operation, favorable climatic conditions at stations and in tunnels. Trans run from 5:25 am to 1 am. Travelers can buy a pre-loaded magnetic smart card (for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 or 60 trips). Rides start at RUB 30 for one ride, RUB 60 for two rides, RUB 300 for 11 rides, and RUB 1,200 for 60 rides. Of course, for those who plan on using the Metro frequently, there are unlimited ride smart cards, starting at RUB 200 (one day), RUB 2,200 (30 days), and RUB 5,200 (90 days).
